Rent Freeze Calculator

How much money would the Rent Freeze save you? Use this calculator to find out!

For example, if you lived in a rent controlled apartment that costs $2,000 a month and it receives an annual rent increase of 4.7%, you would save $2,309.02 during a two year Rent Freeze. Enter your current rent to find out how much money you would save under our proposed Rent Freeze :

Why a 4.7% increase? Every year landlords make the decision of how much they want to raise your rent. With the DC-area’s inflation being 2.7% at the end of 2025, 4.7% is the maximum increase DC rent controlled housing can go up in 2026. The current calculation for the maximum increase in DC rent controlled housing is annual inflation plus 2%, with a maximum of 10%. If you live in a market rate housing, your landlord can increase your rent as much as they want.

Under our ballot initiative three important changes would happen to rents in DC:

  1. A 2 year Rent Freeze would go into effect, which would prohibit landlords of privately-owned housing from increasing your rent
  2. Any time in the future, if inflation hits 5% or higher, then another 1 year Rent Freeze goes into effect
  3. Landlords of privately-owned rent stabilized housing cannot raise the rent higher than 6% a year
